Requirements for installing agent over network

The base requirement for any successful agent installation is that the client computer knows of and can reach the specified server on the specified port.

Apart from that, if agent is installed by the manager, it must be able to copy files over the network to \\ip-address\admin$

The prerequisites for that to be possible is listed below:

Network file access

In order to remote install agent on a computer, the application needs to be able to access the \\computer\admin$ resource. For this to be possible, File & Printer sharing service needs to be installed & enabled.

Ports

In order for installation of agent to be possible, the following ports on the clients must be opened: for UDP – 137 and 138 and for TCP/IP – 139 and 445.

Authentication on clients

Correct access privileges must be provided in order to install agent application through network access. In Nilex Network Scanning Manager it is possible to add user & passwords to be used to authenticate with the client.

Note: For those in a Novell environment, the Windows clients may often be configured with workgroup and no domain. In these cases the network access may be limited by Windows to the guest account. This must be removed in order to gain correct access. It is done by turning of “forceGuest” either by unchecking “Simple File Sharing” in Explorer / Folder options, or in local security policy in the post Network access accounts change from “Only guest” to “classical”. After that it is possible to authenticate with any local account.

Available client resources

In order for agents to be installed the Inventory Service must gain access to the Windows Installer Service (msiexec) on the client. It may happen that this resource gets locked by for example inactive remote connect sessions on servers. In that case, those sessions must be logged off.
